The Canterbury Hockey Junior competition features 3 levels based on players ages from Year 3 through to Year 8. The focus of these grades is to introduce players to the basic individual and team skills of hockey, then build on these as the progress in a fun and supportive environment.
Teams are graded at regular intervals through the first half of the winter competition to ensure even competition between teams and coaches and umpires focus on developing players' understanding of the game and its rules.

mini sticksEntry level competitive hockey starts with the Mini Sticks grade for players in years 3-4. Games are played 6 per side on a 1/3 or 1/4 size turf without a dedicated goal keeper. The Rangiora Hockey Club normally fields 3 girls teams and 1 boys team in the Mini Sticks grades, though this is subject to player numbers. |
kiwi sticksKiwi Sticks hockey is for players in years 5-6, introducing dedicated goal keepers and larger shooting circles on a 1/3 or 1/4 size turf to provide a transition into full turf hockey. In the last couple of years the Rangiora Hockey Club has fielded around 4 girls teams and 2 boys teams in the Kiwi Sticks grades. |
kwik sticks 7 & 11 A sideKwik Sticks hockey for year 7-8 players introduces larger turf sizes and opportunities for players to develop their skills through more time on the ball and more expansive gameplay. Note in 2021 Hockey NZ is changing the format of Kwik Sticks to encourage more skills from all players. We will provide more information about this shortly for players who fall in this age range. |
